gringo starr vs. ringo deathstarr: best band names of sxsw

Music, SXSW March 17th, 2009

SXSW is here, and what you really need, what you can’t get anywhere else, the thing that will put the jam in your jelly roll, is, naturally, a carefully planned schedule of the best SXSW band names.

So: you arrive a little bleary from La Guardia/LAX/Charles De Gaulle; the rough landing put you in the perfect mood for We Should Be Dead, playing the Nueva Onda at 11:30 Monday morning. Tuesday is a good band name pass, (although you could check out Total Abuse at Ms. Bea’s) - I say spend it passed out on the grass in Zilker Park. Austin is also hyped on frisbee golf.

Wednesday, though, the game is on:

First stop - obviously - Pyschedelic Horseshit at Beerland. How can you possibly follow Psychedelic Horseshit? Well, Beerland will do so with Eat Skull, but you won’t have time for them - you’re on your way to Let’s Wrestle at Fader/Fort. Then over to Emo’s for We Were Promised Jetpacks, and you’ll want to catch Gringo Star at the Mohawk - and later on, their creative brethren, Ringo Deathstarr. Tom Schraeder & His Ego will be at Paradise at 4, you grab dinner at Torchys, and as the evening begins, it’s time for Jesus Makes the Shotgun Sound, at Karma Lounge.

Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers rock the Club de Ville at 9, and then the sophisticated pop stylings of Stupid Party will be on display at the Habana Bar. There’s a bit of a dead spot at eleven, but it’s worth the wait for Dananananaykroyd at 11:30, at the Dirty Dog Bar. I know: now you’re tired, but it’s hard to argue with the Star Fucking Hipsters (Opal Devine’s), or for that matter Black Cock* (Room 710), and you can close out Wednesday night in the best possible way, with Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head. Three nights to go, gringo.

*best of luck with your google search for that one.
