jah das ist blitzen

Music January 8th, 2009

Why did it take us so long, as a nation, to produce a good song about being raised by wolves? I think we’ve all been there: the frowned-upon nudity, the hankering for raw meat, learning to “own” our opposable thumbs - and yet all Springsteen gives us is Jersey, love, and the mill closing down. Well, don’t worry: Blitzen Trapper has finally taken care of it, and they’re also working hard to bring back the Twisted Sister angular nesting hair-metal font that was in danger of disappearing from the music scene altogether.

I brought in the last Blitzen Trapper album, Wild Mountain Nation, to a fine and well-respected DJ; he had already heard and passed on it. I liked the Grateful Dead-y sound of the title track, but I wasn’t surprised: Wild Mountain Nation was not an album to get behind. Still, to hear their latest, Furr, makes me feel slightly vindicated, because it’s a success. Thanks BT! You’re making me look good.

Albums like Wild Mountain Nation are frustrating and common if you’re in the business of combing through promos; it has promise, you can see why they were signed, but it’s just not quite there. In fact that’s the most common one word review I would write on promo CDs: “Almost.” Wild Mountain Nation was an almost, but Furr is a definitely.
